I'm caring for someone with HER2+ breast cancer
Caregiving is a demanding role
It's a big responsibility both physically and emotionally to care for someone you love who is dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis and its treatment. Playing the role of cheerleader and keeping that special person optimistic and hopeful can take its toll on you.
Take time out for yourself
Your health matters too, even though it is hard to think about yourself when you are involved as the caregiver.
Set aside a little time to focus on your own needs. Here are some practical tips:
- Take care of you. Keep your own doctor's appointments, screenings and necessary tests
- Eat well. Keep up your energy with a healthy, balanced diet
- Get enough rest. Short naps may help, or talk to your doctor if you aren't sleeping well
- Exercise regularly. Even 30 minutes a day can help you stay focused and energized
- Write in a journal. Recording your feelings can be a welcome stress reliever
- Call a friend. Remember that sharing or just having a laugh is important
